Well we have got to where we wanted to be which is just 2 points behind Chelsea at the top of the table and we did it in some style with possibly our best performance of the year in a 5-0 rout against Wigan. It was just one of this evening midweek games where the atmosphere was top notch and the players really warmed to the occasion and we could and should have probably scored more. The passing, movement and pace of United was something else and we really looked like a team that could do some damage in the rest of the season if we keep some players fit and keep the confidence up.
The man of the match in my opinion was Valencia who created 3 of the goals and scored one beauty towards the end and he looks like a man who is growing in confidence by the game. Most players take a while to settle in and establish themselves when they come from a smaller lub but Valencia is already at the stage where he would be one of the first names on my team sheet and he is starting to chip in with a good few goals and if he keeps going at this rate will finish the season well in to double figures which is exactly the sort of return we need from a midfielder.
Rooney is also well and truly on form and knowing him he will be gutted to get a bit of a rest against Leeds and possibly even City as Fergie looks to keep him fresh for the biggest challenges later in the season. There isn’t an awful lot to worry about at the moment with Rio and Johny Evans set to return in the next 10 days but one massive worry would be if anything ever happened to Rooney and he had any sort of lengthy layoff as he really gels the whole team together. Could you see us winning the big games with Berba and Owen upfront? I couldn’t.
The past 2 games has for the first time this season seen the emergence of our best 11 (minus Rio) and you could pretty much name the team if we had a do or die game tomorrow Van Der Dar, Evra, Vidic, Rio, Brown, Giggs, Valencia, Fletcher, Carrick, Rooney, Berbatov with Owen, Park, Anderson, Kuscak and Neville on the bench. That is where we are nearly at except for Van de Sar and Rio who are not far off at all and I would fancy our chances of winning the league with a good long unbeaten run from now if we can keep that team together. Remember that during December Chelsea have had little or no injury problems, easy fixtures while we have had every obstacle under the sun thrown at us and we are still only a couple of goals behind. The future really does look very good I have to say and 2009 was very good to us ![]()
