Paul Scholes retired from football today at the age of 36. What can you say about him that hasn’t already been said? When you have people like Zidane and Xavi calling him the ‘greatest of his generation’ and ‘the best central midfielder of the last 15, 20 years’, it says it all. To get a player as gifted, talented, consistent and loyal as Scholes is a rarity in the modern game and should be cherished.
He played 466 times for Manchester United between 1994 and 2011, scoring 102 goals. As brilliant as he was, the Ginja Ninja was still vastly under rated in England, another fact acknowledged by Xavi who said: ”If he’d been Spanish he might have been rated more highly,” he said. “Players love him.”
He is my favourite United player of all time. He is now gone. He will remain in the coaching staff which is a massive bonus and should have a great impact on players coming through the ranks and people like Clerverley who play a similar role. It is great ot have him staying in the club. He is a red legend, in the purist sense.
