Manchester United will play Italian Giants Juventus at Old Trafford on May 24 to honour the 18-year career of Club Legend and former Club Captain Gary Neville.
Neville Testmonial v Juventus confirmed
Neville played his final game for United on January 1 this year in United’s 2-1 away win at West Brom. The latter stages of Gary’s career were not the most pleasant as his performances struggled to live up to his own high expectations. It was clear that he had not fully recovered from a long list of injuries in recent seasons and the full-back decided to hang up his boots instead of hanging around picking up his pay cheque and sitting on the bench.
Neville’s career at United was both long and distinguished. Making his debut in 1992 against Torpedo Moscow the bury-born defender went on to make 602 appearances for the club winning eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and the Champions League on that glorious night in the Nou Camp in 1999.
On being granted this testimonial Neville had this to say:
“I am delighted to be given this game by the club, it is going to be a very emotional night for me, especially as I pull on that red shirt once more in what will be my last game for the club.”
“I intend to savour every moment and I hope the fans can share in my special night.”
Sir Alex Ferguson also took the opportunity to pay tribute to his former captain, “Gary has been a loyal servant of Manchester United and this is a fitting tribute to honour Gary and his career,” said Ferguson.
“It also gives the fans the opportunity to show their admiration and appreciation for a player who is very much one of them.
“We have had many great games against Juventus in the past and I am sure this will be another memorable night.”
Shortly after it was confirmed that Neville would be joining the Sky Sports team from the start of the 2011-12 season. This move had been predicted ever since Andy Gray’s sacking and I for one think Neville is perfect for the role. Having seen him in the studio for England’s game against Wales in March he came across very well and as you would expect has his own opinion. Many former players sit in the studio and spit out boring drivel as analysis. G-Force should prove a bit more entertaining over the next few years on our TV screens.
Gary Neville. A True Manchester United Legend.
