Best Manchester United 11 of the Premiership Era

PHILADELPHIA, PA - AUGUST 3: Ruud Van Nistelrooy of Manchester Utd is congratulated by Roy Keane and John O'Shea on scoring the third goal during the Champions World Series game between Manchester United and Barcalona on August 3, 2003, at Lincoln Financial Fields in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The exceptional recent form of Paul Scholes has attracted praise from all quarters and deservedly so. He is consistently singled out as one of the best players of the modern game. He would be in my best United 11 of the premiership era every day of the week. It got me thinking, who else would make that side? It’s a tough process and many will differ but here is my pick for the best United 11 of the premiership era.

Goalkeeper: Although Edwin Van Der Sar has been outstanding for us in recent seasons, there can only be one. Peter Schmeichel was monumental for United and his contribution can never be underestimated. He was an exceptional shot stopper, had a massive presence and who could forget that throw which instigated so many counter attacks.

Right Back: I was always a fan of Paul Parker, although many weren’t, but no one comes close to the  consistency and passion displayed by Gary Neville. He worked tirelessly on his crossing and his support play improved immensely over the years. Oh yeah, and he hates scousers.

Centre Backs: This is not an easy position to pick as we have consistently had excellent centre backs throughout the premiership. There has been the likes of Pallister, Bruce and Vidic. Nemanja, in particular, can count himself unlucky not to make the side. I think the two best defenders have been Stam and Vidic but they are too similar in their styles. Thus, I am shooting for Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand. The Dutchman wasn’t at United for that long but was absolutely brilliant when he was.

Left Back: I am a massive advocate of Evra and genuinely believe he is one of the best left backs in the world. However, there has been no more consistent player for United in the premiership than Denis Irwin. He was capable of stunning free kicks and he crossing was of the highest calibre. The Corkman gets the nod, just.

Right Winger: David Beckham is the greatest crosser of the ball the premiership has ever seen. He scored some genuinely exceptional goals, including the famous goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon. Kanchelskis was a rocket in that brilliant 93/94 side and this has always been a strong position in the United ranks. However, can anyone really challenge Cristiano Ronaldo. Some of his performances were just ridiculous and he was the best player in the world when in his final seasons at United. His countless goals drove us to many, many trophies.

Centre Midfield: Although there has been much talent in the United engine room, this pairing picks itself in my book: Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. This represents the perfect central midfield pairing to me and it doesn’t get better than this partnership. What more can you say about these two? Although different types of players, they are both winners and United through and through. Keane to provide the drive, passion and steel with Scholes to run the show like only he can.

Left Winger: Can there be any debate on this one? It can be none other than the man who has scored in every premiership season and wowed us since 1993: Ryan Giggs. His game has changed over the years but the class remains. That goal in the FA Cup sei-final will be forever etched in the memory.

Strikers: This is the hardest position to select just two players from. There has been a plethora of phenomenal strikers at United in the premiership. To name but a few: Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer, Van Nistlerooy, Hughes,  and Sheringham. One spot has to go to Eric Cantona. The mercurial Frenchman had that something special which we will never forget. There was a special aura about the man and he could produce the exceptional at just the right time. To partner him, I decided to plump for Wayne Rooney. He mightn’t have the goals of Van Nistlerooy but as an all round player, he is a cut above. It is a partnership that could be potentially devastating.

So there it is. My United 11 of the premiership era:

Schmeichel, Neville, Stam, Ferdinand, Irwin, Ronaldo, Keane (c), Scholes, Giggs, Cantona, Rooney.

Whats yours?

I like the fact that Giggs was such an obvious choice you forgot to discuss left wingers at all!

No point in me making an overall best eleven, because i have a very limited knowledge. My first game was the Champions League final against Munich, and i was about 9 so i just remember the big players. Also since then i didn’t watch nearly as many games as you guys.
So i guess i will just choose 11 players that i liked for any reason…

Goalkeeper – Tim Howard
Right Back – Gary Neville
Left Back – Patrice Evra
Center Backs – Stam and Rio Ferdinand
Center Midfield – Roy Kean, Paul Scholes(Second favourite CM of all time behind Rui Costa)
Right Winger: Cristiano Ronaldo
Left Winger: Ryan Giggs (Second favourite winger of all time behind Figo)
Striker: Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke

p.s: I think you forgot to elaborate on Giggs :)

Cheers guys, elaboration on left winger complete :) .
Nuno, would you really have Tim Howard ahead if Edwin Van Der Sar? Rui Costa was always one of my favourite players as well, pure class.

no i wouldn’t. i knew i sould have explained that :)
Has i said i wasn’t choosing the best players, Howard was just a player that i watched during his best season. I know that after that game against Porto in the champions league he was never the same, but oh well…

Also forgot the honorable mention to Karel Poborsky which i never so in Manchester, but he was one of my favorites at Benfica.

Ok here goes….

Schmeichel

Neville Ferdinand Pallister Evra

Keane Scholes Giggs

Ronaldo Cantona

Rooney

It’s a bit of a diamond but I just couldn’t leave any of the front three out and you can’t beat a good diamond! On the bench….

Solskear
Sheringham
Kanchelsksis
Stam
Andy Cole
Van De Saar

Beat that!!

great list~!!!

here is mine:
schmeichel
neville, ferdinand, vidic, irwin

robson, scholes
ronaldo giggs

hughes, cantona
bench: – , van nistlerooy, van der saar, keane, evra, pallister

but my all time fav man utd team would have to be:

schmeicel

Roger Bryne, Bill Foulkes, ferdinand, irwin

robson, scholes,
ronaldo, best,

charlton, cantona

bench: keane, giggs, neville, van der saar, vidic

its so hard to pick between ronaldo, best, and giggsy, i guess it depends on whether you believe best could have been the best ever, whether ronaldo quite possibly is the best player ever, and that giggs has the best man united record.

as for strikers – how do you pick between rooney, yorke, cole, hughes and cantona? i love sparky hughes – when i was a baby and my dad watched the devils play religiously hughes was amazing! but the due of yorke and cole was mighty – and king cantona may be my fav player of all time with scholes. i think rooney is fab – but i want to give him time to create his own legend.

yeah Tom I know it was a killer to leave Scholsey out, however….It was the only way to play 2 up front with one behind….a front 3 of Eric, RVN and Ronaldo. In addition the passing of Giggsy, Becks and Ronaldo at their best was too good to miss. Also it means the 3 of them can inter-change. Ronaldo a free reign to go outside and swap with either Giggsy or Becks. Plus a 4-3-3 was too good to turn down Damn we’d score for fun! As for Ronny Johnson it was a close call with Nev, especially behind Becks, however Ronny was just at home playing centre back so i added him for that reason, a wing back not really needed given the midfield and forwards. Although Denis Irwin was I have to say included partly due to his free kicks and support going forward, not that itd be needed but ya gotta indulge yourself right?

Just wanted to add that Scholsey would of course make the bench, along with a selection of Andy Cole, Evre, Kanchelskis, Nev, Fletch, Ollie and heres a shock just for the hell of it…..O’Shea!!! If only coz he has played everywhere on the pitch and we are talking about them playing at their best on their best day, so who needs a sub keeper lol
Note the lack of Wazza, Ive fell out with him atm which I suspect most ppl have
